What is IPT
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based talking therapy that focuses on improving interpersonal relationships and addressing social and emotional issues. It is designed to help you understand the connection between your mood and relationships, teaching you strategies to resolve interpersonal conflicts, navigate life transitions, and manage social challenges.
In IPT, we explore how relationships affect your mental health. IPT is structured, goal-oriented, and typically short-term, offering practical solutions to improve your mental health and interpersonal functioning.
How Can We Help You with IPT Therapy?
As IPT therapists, our goal is to support you in strengthening your relationships, improving communication, and enhancing your emotional resilience. IPT is particularly effective for issues such as depression, anxiety, grief, and relationship difficulties.
Here's how IPT can benefit you in different areas:
-
Depression: We help you explore how relationship challenges may be contributing to your depression. Together, we work on improving your social interactions, addressing conflicts, and building stronger connections with others.
-
Anxiety: If you struggle with anxiety, we’ll focus on identifying the social triggers and relationship dynamics that may be exacerbating your symptoms. You'll learn strategies to manage anxiety and improve your confidence in social situations.
-
Relationship Issues: Whether you're dealing with conflicts in romantic, family, or work relationships, IPT offers tools to improve communication and resolve misunderstandings, helping to create more fulfilling and healthy connections.
-
Grief and Loss: For those navigating the pain of loss, IPT provides a safe space to process your emotions and adjust to life after a significant loss. We support you in finding ways to cope and build a new sense of normality.
-
Role Transitions: Major life changes, such as starting a new job, retirement, or becoming a parent, can be overwhelming. IPT helps you adjust to these transitions by addressing the emotional impact and helping you find balance in your new role.
-
Social Isolation: IPT addresses feelings of loneliness and disconnection by helping you develop healthier social networks and teaching you ways to engage with others in meaningful ways.
-
Low Self-Esteem: If low self-esteem is impacting your relationships and overall well-being, we work on reshaping negative self-perceptions and building a more positive self-image through improved interactions with others.
-
Family Conflict: Family dynamics can often be complex. IPT provides a structured approach to resolving conflicts, improving communication, and fostering understanding within family relationships.
-
Workplace Stress: Struggles at work, including conflicts with colleagues or supervisors, can have a significant impact on your mental health. IPT helps you manage these issues, find ways to cope with stress, and build more supportive professional relationships.
-
Postpartum Depression: New parents sometimes experience depression related to the overwhelming changes in their lives. IPT can help you navigate this period, address relationship concerns, and provide coping strategies for the emotional challenges of parenthood.
-
Communication Difficulties: If you're finding it hard to communicate your needs or emotions, IPT will help you develop stronger, clearer communication skills, leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships.
Why Choose IPT?
IPT is recommended by numerous clinical guidelines, including those from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), for treating various mental health conditions. Its effectiveness is well-supported by research, particularly in treating depression and relationship-related concerns.
Flexible and Tailored to You
IPT is tailored to your unique needs, focusing on the specific interpersonal issues that are impacting your mental health. We work together to identify the areas in your life where you need support, creating a customised treatment plan that suits you. How IPT Works
Your journey with IPT typically begins with an initial assessment session where we discuss your challenges, goals, and whether IPT is the best approach for you. If so, your therapist will develop a treatment plan that focuses on the interpersonal issues most relevant to your mental health.
IPT is usually short-term, with most clients needing 12-16 sessions. Each session lasts 50 minutes and focuses on addressing your interpersonal challenges through structured conversations and practical exercises.
Our goal is to help you improve your emotional wellbeing by strengthening your relationships and building better communication skills.
Fees: £75 per 50-minute session
