EMDR for Relationship Breakdowns
EMDR for Relationship Breakdowns

Relationship challenges can have a profound impact on our mental health, and for many, they can be linked with past experiences. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy can be a highly effective approach for individuals struggling with relationship issues and breakdowns. Whether you're facing anxiety, fear of intimacy, trust issues, or healing from a painful breakup, EMDR can help you process past experiences that are contributing to this and develop healthier patterns moving forward.

How EMDR Helps with Relationship Issues
EMDR works by helping individuals reprocess negative memories, beliefs, and emotional triggers that may be affecting their relationships. If you're dealing with relationship anxiety, emotional wounds from past relationships, or difficulties with trust and communication, EMDR can help by:
-
Processing past relationship trauma: Difficult past relationships, such as abuse or betrayal, can leave lasting emotional scars. EMDR helps you revisit these experiences in a controlled way, allowing your brain to reprocess and heal from them.

-
Reducing relationship anxiety: Relationship anxiety, whether it stems from fear of abandonment, commitment issues, or low self-worth, can be managed through EMDR. By targeting the root causes of this anxiety, EMDR helps individuals feel more secure in themselves and their relationships.

-
Healing attachment wounds: Early attachment issues or childhood trauma can negatively impact how we relate to others as adults. EMDR helps reprocess these experiences, leading to healthier, more balanced relationships.

-
Breaking negative patterns: Repetitive negative behaviours, like pushing people away or fearing closeness, are often rooted in unresolved emotional pain. EMDR can help interrupt these patterns, allowing for healthier behaviours to emerge.

What Happens in a Therapy Session?
During therapy, you'll recall the relevant memory while doing things like moving your eyes from side to side or hearing sounds in each ear alternately. These actions stimulate your brain's processing system, making the memory less painful. So, you can still remember the event, but it won't be as upsetting as before and will become neutral like most your other memories.

How Many Sessions Are Required?
The number of EMDR sessions needed can vary depending on the individual’s specific needs, the complexity of their relationship issues, and the emotional trauma they may have experienced. Typically, clients require between 8-15 sessions to see significant progress, but this may vary based on personal circumstances.

In your first few sessions, we’ll focus on getting to know your unique situation and identifying the emotional wounds that may be impacting your current or past relationships. From there, we’ll begin EMDR treatment, helping you process these memories and reduce the emotional intensity surrounding them.

Each EMDR session is typically 60 to 90 minutes long, during which we’ll use bilateral stimulation techniques (such as guided eye movements) to help you reprocess difficult memories. Some clients feel relief after just a few sessions, while others may require more time to fully address deeper emotional wounds or recurring relationship patterns.
